The stories

Luca's Trick or Treat

It's Halloween, and your child is first out of the front door, with the family behind and their friend Sophia, a friendly witch, alongside.

Something with glowing eyes is slinking up the path. Down the road, Mrs Wolfe has turned her house into a Wolf's Lair, and things keep jumping out. One by one, everyone gets a fright, and one by one they look properly and see what's really there.

Your child isn't scared of anything. Until they get home.

It ends with the whole family laughing together on the doorstep.

It's Halloween – Are We Scared?

Mrs Wolfe's house down the road has become a Wolf's Lair, and tonight it's open. Your child and Sophia, the friendly witch, go up its dark stairs together, while the grown-ups wait at the bottom and call up.

There's a cobweb across the landing and, near the end, a big hairy wolf. Sophia is scared too, and keeps going anyway, and your child goes with her.

Near the end, the book asks your child, "Are we scared?", and they answer it out loud.

It ends back home, on your own front step.

How it works

1. Talk to us for 15 to 20 minutes. A short conversation about your child and who's in the family, with photos from your phone. It asks what it needs and skips what it doesn't.

2. Approve your family. We draw your family in their costumes and send you the picture. Nothing goes further until you say yes. Once you do, we email you a Happy Halloween colouring page of your family.

Our own family's colouring page. Every order includes one of yours.

3. Approve the book, then pay. You see every page before it's printed, and you pay only when you're happy with it.

4. We print it and post it to you. Once your book goes to print, our printer, Bookvault, aims to send it out the same or the next working day, and tracked post takes 1 to 2 working days. These are Bookvault’s estimates, not a promise.

Ordering both books? You only talk to us once: the second book uses the same conversation and the same family picture. You approve and pay for each book on its own.

Make your book

Have your photos to hand: two clear photos of each person who'll be in the book, with their hair as it usually is and no pictures or logos on their clothes, and one of your front door. If you have a cat, one of her too.

Your child and up to four others can be in the book.

What we ask for, and why

We need clear photos of each person who'll be in the book, so we can draw them, and one of your front door, because that's where both stories start and end. If you have a cat, she's in it. If you don't, a black cat comes to stay for the night and you give her a name.

If anyone other than you and your children is in the book, we'll ask you to confirm they've agreed to be drawn.

Your photos are used only to draw your family for your books. The colouring page is made from that drawing, not from your photos. Your photos are kept privately and deleted 30 days after your last book arrives, or 30 days after you cancel. The finished pictures and print files are kept for 12 months, so a book can be reprinted, then deleted. You can ask us to delete anything sooner: lester@dontdelayreality.com.

Price and delivery

£24.99 a book, UK delivery included. A second book for the same family is £19.99. Extra copies of the same book are £19.99 each. Your family's colouring page is included.

Delivery usually takes 1 to 3 working days from the day your book goes to print, which is after you approve the proof and pay. That is Bookvault’s estimate, not a guarantee. If your book is going to be late, we’ll tell you as soon as we know.

Questions

What age are they for? They're written to be read aloud to children of about three to eight.

What if my child frightens easily? Every fright in both books turns out to be something ordinary, like the cat, a neighbour in a mask or a spider made of fluff. Nothing is left unexplained, and both stories end at home. You see every page before it's printed, so you can judge it for your own child.

What do you do with our photos? We use them only to draw your family for your books, and delete them 30 days after your last book arrives. The privacy notice has the detail.

Can I change things after I see the proof? Yes. You approve the drawing of your family first, then each finished book, and you can ask for one change at each step. If you're still not happy after that, email lester@dontdelayreality.com and Lester will look at it himself. Once you approve a book, it goes to print and can't be changed.

What if it doesn't arrive in time? We can't promise a delivery date. This is our first run, printing and post are handled by others, and if your book is going to be late we'll tell you as soon as we know.
